Not The Room Parent – Help!

Nick has been begging me to volunteer in his class.  You might have guessed it, I’m not the room parent.
In a moment of weakness, I signed up to coordinate the Valentine’s party.  Nick just reminded me last night.  (And Doug laughed out loud when he found out I was in charge. )

I’m not a planner.  I’m not crafty.  One of my friends even tried to show me how to weave some heart basket that she claimed was an “easy” craft, but she lost me after about 30 seconds of weaving.

I need to keep 23 third-graders busy for about an hour.  Sure, there will be plenty of snacks, but I really want to make it fun for Nick.  So far, I suggested we play musical chairs to Love Shack.  But that’s all I’ve got.

I could really use your help!  Any brilliant (but easy) ideas out there to help me outdo the room parent?

What about having all of the kids decorate their own valentines' mailboxes (out of tissue boxes)? That's all I've got! I'm not very creative either. Check out www.amazingmoms.com for party ideas. Good luck!

Susan, I'm not the craftiest person in the world, but I volunteered in my daughter's class for years. Here are three ideas to consider.

1) Valentine Box - Have teacher ask children to bring in a shoe box or tissue box (and round up some on your own for those who don't show up with one.) Begin by cutting a slit in the lid, if needed. Cover box with construction paper. Cut border in contrasting color with fancy edger scissors sold at same places and glue to the top edge of box. Decorate box with Valentine's-themed stickers and/or sticky-backed foam hearts, which Walmart, Michaels, etc. sell in big containers. Write name with colored markers.

2) Frost cupcakes with white, pink, and/or red frosting. Decorated with candy conversation hearts, sprinkles, colored sugars, etc.

3) Write Happy Valentine's Day on the board. Have students create a list of words using the letters in those three words. Have prizes for winners to encourage participation.

How about playing BINGO with conversation hearts? Each kid can fill in their own BINGO sheet with different sayings that are on conversation hearts... pass out some handfuls of the candies to get them started. (If they write down phrases that don't exist on the actual hearts, no one will ever win!) Once they all have their sheets filled in, you can start pulling candy hearts out of a bag. As you call them out, they can put their own candies on the spaces that they have. BINGO is always a winner- and it takes a while for them to fill in the BINGO charts with their own phrases, so it takes lots of time!
